Choosing aged care

Sometimes it becomes clear that an elderly person needs the care and attention that only an Aged Care facility can provide. The decision to look at aged care services for your loved one can be a difficult and emotional time. You may experience feelings of stress and uncertainty when you are faced with the challenges of finding the best care for a parent or relative.

Talking to your doctor, health centre or hospital about your thoughts and feelings will help. They are your first call when you’re looking for appropriate Aged Care, and can support you through this difficult and emotional time.

Being Assessed

Being assessed

Every person entering an Aged Care facility needs to be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). ACAT assess older people who are having difficulty living at home. They can approve eligibility for entry into residential care, assess for the level of care you need [link to Amity's FAQ page] and provide information about your local residential Aged Care services. You can contact ACAT directly [Amity's Resources and Links page], or be referred by your GP, health centre or hospital.

Choice Helping you make the right choice

Having a checklist for each home you visit is a good idea so you can more easily compare the care and services provided by the homes you go to.
When you visit a home you should look at the services offered in the home, the environment and activities, the care from staff, and the feel of the home. Amity are very happy to arrange a tour for families interested in their residences, so please feel free to contact a centre near you.

You may want to ring the Commonwealth Carelink Centre on 1800 052 222, or you can obtain a copy of the Choosing an Aged Care Home Checklist.

Financial help Who can I talk to about my financial situation?

Before deciding on an Aged Care home it’s important to understand the financial aspects and obligations. It is a good idea to contact an independent financial advisor or your own legal representative. Centrelink also has a Financial Services Officer who can talk to you about your situation, phone 132 300. This is a free and confidential service available to everyone. You can also visit Centrelink Financial Services online.

Amity recognises that every resident’s financial circumstances are different and we have endeavored to provide a range of options for the payment of fees, comprising basic daily fees set by the Commonwealth government and fees and charges payable including Accommodation Bonds.

Amity residential managers will be able to talk to you about costs, so please feel free to ask when visiting an Amity home
